It's a shame, because if Lenna had gotten some kind of direction, she may have turned out okay. Instead, she learned that what's there, you take. What you take, you keep, what you keep, you protect, and fuck everyone else. None of her foster families were particularly bad, just generally negligent and none had the patience to handle a wild kid who seemed to love to lie. She was orphaned at nine, and her first few years were spent just acting out, dealing with how miserable she was without her parents. Her family had been loving if small; her grandomother couldn't handle her and so to foster care she went. She spent a lot of time running away or getting kicked out; by the time she was sixteen she decided it was high time to move on, but she didn't want to do it the dumb way. She spent eight months collecting supplies by pickpocketing and lying to her foster parents (pretending to care about band, for instance, and getting an instrument and help fundraising $250 for a non-existant trip to a concert). When they went out for an evening, she took whatever wasn't nailed down, threw it in their second car, and left. She pawned it all over the city with one big exception -- the laptops -- and then left town. She headed for Florida because it was warm; decided on Tampa because it was the cheapest bus ticket. Since then, she's been digging into the hacker community to live. She's always had a knack for two things: suckering people and computers. It makes a nice combination. She can't program to save her life, but give her a round of singles night or speed dating and she'll have a dozen mothers maiden names with credit card numbers to match. She's known as 'Torch' by the hacker comms because she can shed light on just about anything. She's (wisely) kept herself out of anything extensive, and so she's slid under the police radar for the most part. She doesn't have a place of her own, just couch-surfs, but she's got a string of mailboxes and gym lockers across the city, and even one safety deposit box. She makes her money in turns via petty theft, legit computer work, and the occasional under the table cash job bartending or DJing. Since then, she and her family have taken tremendous pride in being British, and moved very quickly up various social ladders, despite the racial troubles they had after the war. She grew up quite privileged, and when it was discovered she was a prodigy she had access to the best schools and education. She's gone to school in four countries, had a doctorate by 23 and a medical degree by 28. Her intellectual curiousity got her into trouble rather frequently, and nearly got her killed once. She was saved just in the nick by an old friend from med school, Owen, who got her involved in Torchwood. Torchwood was great for her -- all the best equipment, all the most interesting cases, and a chance to really be as bold as her grandfather. She'll never leave.
